Discrete mathematics is the branch of mathematics that deals with countable, distinct structures and is fundamental to providing foundation principles for discrete transforms which are essential for analyzing and processing digital signals in various applications from digital signal processing and wireless communications. This talk delves into the invention of fundamentals of discrete transforms and various essential applications from analysis and manipulations of data to compression, filtering and feature extraction, as well as the combination with artificial intelligence and machine learning in the facilitation of effective extraction and recognition for enhancement of performance.

Dr. Susanto Rahardja
Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT)

Professor Susanto Rahardja received his B.Eng. degree from the National University of Singapore, M.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; all in the field of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and attended the Stanford Executive Program at Stanford University, San Jose, USA. He is currently a Professor at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT). Prior to joining SIT, he was professors at Nanyang Technological University, National University of Singapore and Northwestern Polytechnical University. His research interests are in multimedia coding and processing, wireless communications, discrete transforms, machine learning, signal processing algorithms, implementation and optimization. Dr Rahardja has in total secured more than US$30 million of grants, published more than 300 internationally refereed journals and conferences, and authored more than 50 technical contributions to ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29/WG11 & ITU-T SG16 Q.6 with more than 50 granted patents worldwide. One of his notable contributions was the development of a series of audio compression technologies (patented) that was incorporated into ISO/IEC144963:2005/Amd3:2006 and his patents were endorsed to be essential to the standards.

Dr. Rahardja has more than 15 years of experience in leading research teams in the above-mentioned areas where he held multiple leadership positions for which at different intervals the size of the research team was up to 600. In professional activities, he was past Associate Editors of IEEE Transactions on Audio, Speech and Language Processing, IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, past Senior Editor of the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Signal Processing, and is currently serving as Associate Editors for the Elsevier Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Multimedia and a member of Editorial Board of IEEE Access. He was the Conference Chair of 5th ACM SIGGRAPHASIA in 2012, APSIPA Summit and Conferences in 2010 and 2018 as well as served more than 15 General Chair/co-Chairs in many other conferences/workshops in ACM, IEEE and SPIE. Dr Rahardja was a recipient of several honors including the IEE Hartree Premium Award, the Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors' Open Category Gold award, the Singapore National Technology Award, A*STAR Most Inspiring Mentor Award, Finalist of the 2010 World Technology & Summit Award, the Nokia Foundation Visiting Professor Award, the ACM Recognition of Service Award, First Prize, China Remote Sensing Excellent Achievement Award, 2023 and etc. His achievement of the first Made-in-Singapore technology adopted in international standards and licensed worldwide was selected in A*STAR’s 30 Most Impactful Innovations & Inventions over Three Decades.

He is a Fellow of IEEE, a Fellow of the Academy Engineering, Singapore, a Fellow of Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association and a Fellow of Industry Academy, International Artificial Intelligence Industry Alliance.
