Abstract

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have adverse effects on air quality, human health and global warming. However, they are just one constituent of many in ambient air and present in concentrations below ppb level. To reliably analyse them despite the complex matrix, suitable extraction and preconcentration approaches as well as detectors with sufficient detection limits are needed.

This seminar will briefly introduce common detectors and focus on preconcentration techniques found in ambient air VOC analyses. The techniques covered involve the cryogenic zone, solvents, membranes and immobilized sorbents as extraction and/or preconcentration matrix. After the introduction of the respective techniques, the seminar will highlight considerations and recent developments for the predominantly utilized preconcentration approaches in ambient air VOC measurements.
