As demands for bandwidth, data movement, and computing performance grow, silicon photonics alone faces increasing limitations. Photonic Heterogeneous Integration (PHI) addresses these challenges by combining complementary materials, including silicon for scalable manufacturing, SiN for low-loss routing, lithium niobate for high-speed modulation, Germanium for high-speed photodetection, and III-V semiconductors for light generation.

By integrating these materials on a unified platform, PHI enables higher-performance, more functional, and scalable photonic systems. This presentation will highlight recent PHI breakthroughs, key device demonstrations, and semiconductor-compatible manufacturing pathways toward next-generation optical interconnects, AI infrastructure, advanced sensing, and 400 Gb/s-per-lane and beyond.

Speakers / Performers:
Dr. LUO Xianshu
Senior Principal Scientist and Head of Silicon Photonics Department, A*STAR IME, Singapore Vice President, National Semiconductor Translation and Innovation Centre, Singapore

Dr. Luo received his Ph.D. in Electronic and Computer Engineering from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2010, specializing in silicon photonics. He began his career at A*STAR’s Institute of Microelectronics (IME) as a Scientist, where his work focused on silicon photonic integrated circuits and heterogeneous optoelectronic integration. In 2017, he co-founded Advanced Micro Foundry (AMF), where he progressed from Research Manager to Research Director, leading R&D on silicon photonics integration platforms and Process Design Kit (PDK) development.

He returned to A*STAR IME in 2023 as Principal Scientist and subsequently served as Deputy Head and Head of the Photonics & Sensors Department. He currently serves as Senior Principal Scientist and Head of Department, Silicon Photonics, at A*STAR IME, and Vice President of Silicon Photonics Platform Technology at Singapore’s National Semiconductor Translation and Innovation Centre (NSTIC). In these roles, he leads the development of next-generation silicon photonics and Photonic Heterogeneous Integration (PHI) technologies, with a focus on integrating best-in-class photonic materials and translating advanced research into scalable, manufacturable platforms.

Dr. Luo is a Fellow of Optica, Senior Member of IEEE, Lifetime Member of SPIE, and member of PMI. He has served in editorial roles for leading photonics journals and is actively involved in the international photonics community through conference leadership, technical program committees, and peer-review activities. He has authored or co-authored more than 250 publications, contributed to five book chapters, and holds more than 40 patents in photonics and optoelectronics.
