Abstract

Materials adopting the perovskite crystal structure have emerged as a dominant force in the photovoltaics and energy materials research sphere within the last ten years. The intrinsic properties of these compounds make them very well suited for optoelectronic applications, including favorable optical/electronic properties (e.g., strong absorption, long carrier lifetimes and large carrier mobilities), flexible form factors, and facile solution- or vacuum-based film processing. However, the majority of the highest-performing compounds are based on lead (toxic) and are unstable under exposure to light, humidity and/or air. Each of these limitations present major hurdles to the deployment of perovskite-based devices on a commercial scale. Within the broader perovskite research landscape, he has four main thrusts to move towards addressing some of these problems:

  1. Exploration of lead-reduced or lead-free optical absorbers;
  2. Development of improved charge extraction layers for optoelectronic devices;
  3. Advancement of new deposition and crystal-growth techniques; and
  4. Investigations of the fundamental structure-property relationships in organic-inorganic hybrids.

About the Speaker

Prof. David MITZI is a world-renowned pioneer in the "hybrid organic-inorganic electronics" field and a Fellow of Materials Research Society. He received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Engineering Physics from Princeton University in 1985 and his Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Stanford University in 1990. Prior to joining the faculty at Duke in 2014, Dr. Mitzi spent 23 years at IBM’s T.J. Watson Research Center, where his focus was on the search for and application of new electronic materials, including organic-inorganic hybrids and inorganic materials for photovoltaic, LED, transistor, and memory applications. During 2018-2024, Prof. Mitzi was conferred as the ‘Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researcher’ by Clarivate Analytics. Also, he was recognized as an ‘MRS Fellow’ by the Materials Research Society in 2018. Now, he is the Simon Family Distinguished Professor and Professor in the Thomas Lord Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at Duke University.

For his final five years at IBM, he served as manager for the Photovoltaic Science and Technology Department, where he initiated and managed a multi-company program to develop a low-cost, high-throughput approach to deposit thin-film chalcogenide-based absorber layers for high-efficiency solar cells. Prof. Mitzi’s current research interests involve making emerging photovoltaic materials more effective, cost-efficient and competitive for the energy market. He holds a number of patents, and has authored or coauthored more than 190 papers and book chapters.
