Substance misuse is a global health concern. Cannabis and stimulants, in particular methamphetamine and cocaine, are the two most misused illicit drugs worldwide and in Hong Kong. Their misuses carry substantial mental health implications, including the development of substance use disorders, mood disorders and psychosis. The potential bi-directional associations between underlying psychiatric disorders and these two substance misuses have also been long postulated. The current seminar will give you an overview on the substance misuse situation in Hong Kong, the latest evidence for treating cannabis and stimulant misuse from the Substance misuse To Psychiatric disorders (SToP) Program, and the way forward for substance misuse psychiatry.

Dr. Albert Chung is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, the University of Hong Kong and is the psychiatrist in-charge of the Substance Abuse Clinic Services for the Hong Kong West Cluster. Dr. Chung was conferred fellowship with the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine and the Hong Kong College of Psychiatrists in 2010. He was awarded the Distinguished Young Fellow by the Hong Kong College of Psychiatrists in 2015. He currently serves as the Director of Education and Chief Examiner for Psychiatry and the Problem-based Learning Educator in the School of Clinical Medicine in the University of Hong Kong. In addition, Dr. Chung is appointed as the Vice-President for the Hong Kong Society of Biological Psychiatry and serves as advisory group members in various government’s committees. His research interests reside in clinical psychopharmacology, technology-assisted medical education and substance misuse psychiatry. He is also the founder of the Substance misuse To Psychiatric disorders Program (SToP Program) dedicated to research and intervention for substance misuse psychiatry.
