Ambition: Echoes of Excellence

Rationale: Every composer has a magnum opus, for Beethoven it was his 7th Symphony, for Gershwin it was his Porgy and Bess. With that perspective, our 2026 Welcome Concert will showcase what different composers consider to be their best work, from Classical pieces to famous movie themes, mirroring the change in style and lushness while also echoing colourful emotions through fixed ideas. With the help of University Philharmonic Orchestra HKUSTSU, this special evening will honour not just our legacies, but also the beautiful melodies composers have left for us, embracing a new age in music at HKUST.

About the University Philharmonic Orchestra
Formed in 2005 through the merging of the Wind Ensemble and Strings Ensemble, the UPO is a student-led society under the HKUST Student Union. Unlike orchestras tied to music faculties, our members hail from diverse academic disciplines and join for the sheer joy of making music.
In the previous Winter Concert, UPO incorporated technological breakthroughs with the collaboration of HKGAI, providing a lasting impression to the audience, while also earning them the Innovative Award from LAPSO. We also made our outstanding debut in Hong Kong City Hall for our Annual Concert, spreading our influence to the public to new heights, while also earning unanimous praise for our dedication to music.
