Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of crystalline porous materials composed of metal nodes linked by organic ligands, have emerged with significant application potentials. Characterized by exceptionally high surface areas, permanent porosity, and tunable pore sizes, MOFs are highly modular materials with virtually endless possible combination of metal nodes and organic ligands. By leveraging reticular chemistry, their structures can be rationally designed and tailored at the molecular level for targeted applications. This seminar presents the fundamental principles of MOF architecture, historical development, compositions, and classifications. It highlights key applications including gas absorption and separation, heterogeneous catalysis, sensing and even drug delivery.
