The simplest case of atmospheric flow close to the surface, called the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) flow, is one that resides over a flat underlying surface of uniform roughness, and is driven by a constant pressure gradient in a neutrally stratified environment. This case is called the idealized barotropic neutral boundary layer (NBL), and has been of theoretical interest to atmospheric scientists for over a century. as it serves both as a starting point and a reference to the real ABL flows. In this study, we show that flow dynamics of the NBL, including both bulk measures and vertical profiles of velocity and turbulent stress, may well be described as functions of a dimensionless Rossby number.

Prof. Bowen ZHOU
School of Atmospheric Sciences Nanjing University

Bowen Zhou, PhD. is a professor at the School of Atmospheric Sciences, Nanjing University. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on theories and parameterizations of atmospheric turbulence and the atmospheric boundary layer. He has served as the principal investigator of a project under the National Key R&D Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology. He has also undertaken projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Jiangsu Distinguished Young Scholars Fund. He was awarded the Young Scholar of the Chang Jiang Scholars Program by the Ministry of Education in 2019. Currently, he serves as a Committee Member of the Boundary Layer and Turbulence Committee, American Meteorological Society (AMS). He is an Editorial Board Member of AOSL, Boundary-Layer Meteorology, and an Associate Editor of the Monthly Weather Review.
