To celebrate the 5th anniversary of the Shaw Auditorium, local artist Apple WONG Hiu-Fung is invited to lead a six-session Acrylic Painting Workshop. Designed to foster artistic creativity and encourage students and staff document campus life, this workshop offers hands-on experience in painting and sketching at the Shaw Auditorium.

The workshop will be led by award-winning local artist Ms. Apple WONG, recipient of the Derwent Art Prize Young Artist Award and the Hong Kong Cliftons Art Prize. Throughout the sessions, participants will learn acrylic painting on canvas, covering color theory along with techniques like color mixing, layering, brushwork, and texture creation. Ms. Wong will also lead an outdoor sketching exercise to help participants develop quick-drawing techniques they can continue using anywhere.

LESSON DETAILS

Lesson 1 (Sep 24, 2026)

Basic Skills of Acrylic
The instructor will introduce acrylic painting, including an overview of the medium and its characteristics. A demonstration of basic acrylic painting techniques and color mixing will follow. Participants will then take part in a hands-on color-mixing exercise using acrylic paint on paper.

 

Lesson 2 (Oct 8, 2026)

Drawing Plant

The instructor will introduce the development of plant painting in art history, followed by a demonstration of layering techniques. Afterward, participants will then apply these techniques by creating a plant-themed painting on canvas.

 

Lesson 3 (Oct 15, 2026)

Review Paintings - Plant

The instructor will conduct a group review of all participants’ paintings and lead a discussion on their works. Individual feedback will be provided for each painting, accompanied by demonstrations to illustrate areas for improvement and further techniques. After the review and discussion, participants will complete their paintings.

 

Lesson 4 (Oct 22, 2026)

Outdoor Sketching

The instructor will introduce basic sketching concepts and demonstrate quick-drawing techniques. Once participants are familiar with these methods, they will move outdoors to practice sketching with acrylic markers. The session will conclude with a group review, during which feedback will be given on participants’ artworks for further improvement.

 

Lesson 5 (Oct 29, 2026)

Texture

The instructor will introduce texture painting in art history, followed by a demonstration of texture techniques using acrylic paint. Participants will apply these techniques by creating a textured painting on canvas.

 

Lesson 6 (Nov 5, 2026)

Texture

The instructor will conduct a group review of participants’ textured paintings and lead a discussion on their works. Individual comments will be provided, supported by demonstrations to illustrate techniques and areas for improvement. Participants will complete their paintings on canvas.

 

Introduction of the Instructor

Apple WONG Hiu-Fung is a local artist. Upon her graduation from the Academy of Visual Arts at Hong Kong Baptist University, she has held solo exhibitions in Hong Kong and has participated in various art exhibitions and expos. Her works have been exhibited in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau, Belgium, England and Singapore. In 2017, she published a poetry and painting collection named "Summer of Freedom" in collaboration with local poet She Kwan and publisher Art and Culture Outreach. In 2018, she independently published a zine called "One Portrait One Arabic". She received the Derwent Art Prize Young Artist Award in 2016, with her artwork exhibited at London’s Mall Galleries. In 2011, she was awarded the Hong Kong Cliftons Art Prize 2011, and her selected work was collected by Cliftons.

    Eligible applicants will receive a confirmation email along with the payment method. If the workshop is full, your application will be placed on the waiting list, and you will receive a waiting list notification email.
     
  3. Payment and Release of Unpaid Spots:

    Please complete the payment by the deadline specified in the email. Your spot will only be confirmed upon successful payment. Applications not paid by the deadline will be treated as withdrawn, and the spots will be released.

  • Please present your Student Card / Staff Card for identity verification when attending the workshop.
  • The Shaw Auditorium Unit reserves the right in its sole discretion to make changes to the program without prior notice.
