Overview

The speakers will talk about the lives and contributions of the late Prof. George SMOOT (IAS Professor-at-Large) and the late Prof. Chen-Ning YANG (Founding Chair, International Advisory Board of IAS) as scientists, and share anecdotes about their personal encounters with the two distinguished educators.

From CMB to Dark Matter - The Legacy of Prof. George Smoot (Speaker: Prof. Tao LIU)

This talk commemorates Prof. George Smoot and his pivotal contributions to Modern Precision Cosmology, particularly his groundbreaking work on the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation, which provided crucial evidence for the Big Bang theory. The talk will also highlight his impactful time at HKUST, where he made significant contributions to advancing dark matter research.

This talk serves to honor Prof. Smoot's legacy and reflect on how his work continues to influence our understanding of the universe's evolution and the fundamental nature of dark matter.

Introduction to Parity Violation and Yang-Mills Fields (Speaker: Prof. Yi WANG)

This talk commemorates Prof. Chen-Ning Yang and introduces two of his significant contributions in non-technical terms: (1) Parity nonconservation — the fundamental and profound distinction between left and right, and (2) Yang-Mills field — the framework for fundamental forces in nature.

The tree planting ceremony will be held at 12:00 pm.
