There will be lots of time for questions and discussion. In this seminar, two distinguished female scholars, both of whom have held ministerial positions in South Korea and Hong Kong SAR, will share their unique experiences of navigating the intersection between academia and government.
The two Sophias will also engage in a discussion on critical social and health policy issues facing these two Asian tiger economies.

Professor Sophia Seung-yoon Lee (李承潤 教授)

Professor Sophia Seung-yoon Lee (李承潤 教授) is a former Vice Chairperson of the Presidential Committee on Youth Policy Coordination (a ministerial appointment) in the Prime Minister’s Office of the Republic of Korea. She also served on the Korean National Pension System Reform Committee. Professor Lee earned her PhD in Social Policy from the University of Oxford and currently holds a professorship in the Department of Social Welfare at Chung-Ang University (中央大學).

Professor Sophia Siu-chee Chan (陳肇始 教授)
University of Hong Kong

Professor Sophia Siu-chee Chan (陳肇始 教授) served as the Secretary for Food and Health for the Hong Kong SAR Government from 2017 to 2022, becoming the first nurse in Hong Kong to be appointed to this ministerial position. During her tenure, Professor Chan led the Food and Health Bureau in Hong Kong’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic for over two and a half years. She is currently the Director of the HKU Primary Health Care Academy and serves as a Senior Advisor to the President’s Office at the University of Hong Kong (HKU).
