ECE Seminar - Research  in Large Language Models at BAAI and the Implications on AI Infrastructure and Hardware/Software Codesign

In this talk, Dr. Lin will provide a comprehensive overview of the cutting-edge research advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) at the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence (BAAI). The discussion will delve into the transformative impact of these models on the underlying AI infrastructure and the necessity for a synergistic approach to hardware and software codesign. Dr. Lin will begin by highlighting the recent breakthroughs in LLMs, emphasizing their capabilities in natural language understanding, generation, and the growing significance in multimodal applications. A significant portion of the presentation will be dedicated to the implications of these models on AI infrastructure, addressing the critical interplay between hardware and software in the context of LLMs.

Dr. Yonghua Lin
Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence

Lin Yonghua received Ph.D from Xi'An Jiaotong University.  She is member of IEEE Women in Engineering Asia Pacific Leadership Team. In recognition of her outstanding leadership in technology, Dr. Lin was appointed by IBM headquarters as the fifth Director of the IBM Research Institute in China in 2018. This marked the first time in the 24-year history of the IBM Research Institute in China that a director has been appointed from within China, and she is also the first female director. Recently,  she  became the Vice President and CTO of Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence, responsible for AI System and Foundation Software for large models, and industry ecosystem cooperation. 
She has been engaged in research on system architecture, cloud computing, AI systems, computer vision, and other fields for nearly 20 years. She has won the ACM/IEEE Best Paper awards. She was named one of the "50 Leading Female Tech Leaders in China" by Forbes in 2019.
