Rapid urbanization has made a notable impact on the society and environment around us. With over 50% of the world’s population now live in cities, human beings face a huge challenge in sustainability of the ever growing urban communities. How could we better understand and respond to the issues with regard to Environment and Sustainable Urban Living?

In the upcoming online workshop co-organized by Zhejiang University and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, renowned experts will share their insight and foresight from diversified perspectives - air quality, water treatment, intelligent transportation, etc. - to explore the possibilities for improving environmental sustainability as well as urban wellbeing in research and innovation. Prof. Xiqun (Michael) CHEN

Title: On-Demand Shared Mobility Services for Smart Cities

Prof. Xiqun (Michael) Chen is Tenured Professor of Zhejiang University, Director if Institute of Intelligent Transportation Systems, and Vice Dean of ZJU-UIUC Institute. Prof. Chen's research interests include shared mobility and intelligent transportation systems. He serves as the Chair of Transport Consultant for World Bank, board member of ASCE Greater China Section, and editorial board member of Transportation Search Part C: Emerging Technologies. Prof. Chen has published over 100 international journal papers on Management Science, M&SOM, Transportation Science, Transportation Research Part B, Patterns, etc. He received Excellent Young Scholars Award of NSFC, Science and Technology Innovation Youth Award of China Communications, and Transportation Association, Science and Technology Award of China Intelligent Transportation Systems Association, Best Ph.D. Dissertation Award of IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society, and Best Paper Awards at six international conferences.

Prof. Alexis Kai Hon LAU
Head and Chair Professor, Division of Environment and Sustainability, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

Title: Personalised real-time air quality informatics system for exposure - Hong Kong

Prof. Alexis Lau is the Head and Chair Professor of the Division of Environment and Sustainability at HKUST, a Chair Professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Director of the Institute for the Environment at HKUST. He specializes in data analysis and modeling of air quality, weather, and climate. In recent years, his research has focused on interdisciplinary studies concerning total air exposure and health, climate adaptation and resilience, and the development of net-zero tools for decarbonization, including blockchain-based carbon tracking systems and new green finance instruments.

Professor Lau has served on a number of government committees and professional institutes, including as a scientific adviser for the Hong Kong Observatory, a member of the Advisory Council for the Environment, and chair of the qualification panel of the HK Institute of Qualified Environmental Professionals. He has also served internationally as a member of the Scientific Advisory Group of the World Health Organization Panel on the development of a Global Platform on Air Quality and Health, and an expert member of the Environmental Sustainable Transport Program of the United Nations Center for Regional Development, and has lectured for the UN on air quality management in several developing countries.

Researcher of College of Environment and Resource Sciences, Zhejiang University

Title: Leverage Microbial Ecology for Biofilm Engineering in Water Treatment and Reuse Systems

Prof. Yu is a researcher at the College of Environmental and Resource Sciences, Zhejiang University. His research interest lies in bacterium-phage interactions and microbe-material interactions in natural and engineered environments. His research aims to advance our knowledge of environmental microbiology and develop innovative techniques that address emerging microbial issues related to water security and public health. He has published over 40 papers in journals such as Accounts of Chemical Research, Environmental Science & Technology, and Microbiome.

Prof. Zhi NING
Associate Professor, Division of Environment and Sustainability, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

Title: Low Cost Sensor Technology and its Network Application for Air Science and Management

Prof. Zhi Ning is an Associate Professor of the Division of the Environment and Sustainability and Associate Director of Interdisciplinary Program Office in The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.  His research interests cover the urban air quality, environmental monitoring technologies, with a focus on development of micro sensor and its application for air science, environmental management and public health assessment. Dr. Ning has been very active in technology innovation and development with more than 150 international publications, holding multiple US and China patents in sensing technology with international award.
