China's modern education system has been built mainly upon Western experiences since the late Qing Dynasty. As an important component of this system, our current knowledge and value are therefore dominated by the West. Meanwhile, China's traditional knowledge and value are still profoundly influencing how we behave and do things. We are keen to integrate these two different traditions since the late Qing Dynasty, and this has become necessary for us to find our spiritual homeland and feel settled. Nowadays, the integration of Chinese and Western cultures has become more urgent with unprecedented conditions and possibilities. This lecture will focus on the pursuit of knowledge and ideas of contemporary Chinese scholars and especially university students, which combines the characteristics of current higher education with individual learning and research experience and aims to discuss and share about how we can ferry between East and West in a relieved and satisfied way as Chinese people.
