ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Dr Ken CHENG (Music Director)

From 1997 to 2005, Ken was the conductor of the HKUSTSU Wind Ensemble and led the Wind Ensemble in various exchanges. In 2005, the HKUSTSU Wind Ensemble and String Team underwent restructuring and merged to form the present University Philharmonic Orchestra, HKUSTSU, in which Ken has remained the conductor until now. Apart from conducting, Ken also takes part in music arrangement and is often invited to the training and adaptation of performance scores. He was one of the conductors and arrangers of “Taichi Mania Symphonic Live 2018” in the Hong Kong Coliseum. He also conducted orchestral performances in two consecutive summers in Vienna, 2018 at the concert hall of the Vienna Boys' Choir, and 2019 at the Musikverein. Now he is also the conductor of Hong Kong Enharmonica.

 

String Quartet

Terry LEUNG (Lead Violinist)

Terry Leung began violin lessons under late violinist Lim Kek Han and late Professor Lin Yao Ji. He was awarded the APA Advanced Diploma, L.R.S.M. Diploma and F.T.C.L Fellowship Diploma in violin performance. He then received the Chancellor Award to further his studies in USA under renowned violinist Tiberius Klausner, Benny Kim and Professor Paul Hatton. He graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music in 1996.

 

He was the concertmaster of the China Philharmonic Orchestra (Hong Kong) from 1997 to 2013. He also appeared as guest conductor and soloist to perform the violin concertos of Vivaldi and Mendelssohn with the orchestra. In recent years, he appeared as soloist and conductor to tour with the VTC Symphony Orchestra in Macau, Shenzhen, Beijing and Shanghai.

 

He was the Music Director of China Philharmonic Orchestra (Hong Kong) from 2014 to 2019.

 

TANG Wai Ho (Violin)

Tang Wai Ho Matthew, 2004 HKUST graduate student. He has joined HKUST music-related groups (from string team and now University Philharmonic Orchestra, HKUSTSU) for more than 10 years. He had been the concertmaster for most of the years during his participation.

 

In 2013, he founded the Hong Kong Metropolitan Philharmonic Orchestra (www.hkmpo.org) with other Hong Kong Musicians and had regular performances.

 

Marcus YAN (Viola)

Marcus Yan is an amateur violist. Although his career is in science, his great enthusiasm for music has led him to participate in various orchestras and performances (including HK Metropolitan Philharmonic Orchestra, Bach Choir 50th seasonal celebration, Taichi Mania Symphonic Live 2018, Hong Kong Enharmonica, Shatin Philharmonic Orchestra, HKUSTSU University Philharmonic Orchestra, and others).

 

LEE Yik Chung (Cello)

Born in Hong Kong, Lee is an orchestral conductor who worked also as an active double bassist and cellist while at the same time working as a composer and art administrator. To promote classical music to the community, Lee has set up the Hong Kong Community Philharmonic Orchestra since 2013 and has led the orchestra to perform as their director and conductor.

 

Lee is a CASH member and he has worked on arrangements for ensemble under the request of specific occasions.
