Abstract

In this lecture, an intuitive introduction to deep neural networks will be provided, giving insight into how and why such models work in practice. It will also be explained how these methods are being used to solve important real-world problems. Examples will be provided of how such methods are making an impact in security, business and healthcare.

About the speaker

Prof. Lawrence Carin received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from University of Maryland in 1989. He then joined the Polytechnic University at Brooklyn (which is now NYU Tandon School of Engineering) as an Assistant Professor and moved to Duke University as an Associate Professor in 1995. He is currently the James L. Meriam Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and also the Vice Provost for Research of Duke University.

Prof. Carin’s early research was in the area of electromagentics and sensing, and over the last 15 years his research has moved to applied statistics and machine learning. He is one of the most highly published investigators in the world in this field who has published over 400 peer-reviewed articles.

Prof. Carin held the William H. Younger Distinguished Professorship of Engineering during 2003-2014. He was also elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2001. He also received the Research Award by Duke University School of Engineering (2002).
