HKUST-BDR Joint Research Institute (HBJRI) is going to organize an online Frontier Technologies Seminar on 25 March 2020 (Wed). 3 faculty from HKUST (Bio attached) will give seminars on topics in Construction, Automation and AI to researchers in Bright Dream Robotics (BDR) and HKUST.


Faculty and researchers of HKUST are welcome to attend the seminar and explore potential ways of collaboration on mutually-interested research projects.


Topics that BDR is interested in are as follows:



  • Construction Robotics (typically, integration of control, actuation, and vision)

  • AI & Big data

  • Building Technologies & Intelligent Manufacturing


6 projects have already been selected in the first 2 rounds of call for proposal, and 3 of them are going to be completed in this season. The Institute is currently accepting expression of interest from HKUST faculty for the next round of Call for Proposal (Batch 3). Speakers / Performers:
Prof. Qifeng CHEN
CSE / ECE

Dr. Qifeng Chen is an assistant professor of CSE and ECE at HKUST. He received his Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford University in 2017, and a bachelor's degree in computer science and mathematics from HKUST in 2012. His research interests are computer vision, machine learning, optimization, and computer graphics. He is named one of 35 Innovators under 35 in China in 2018 by MIT Technology Review. He won the Google Faculty Research Award in 2018. In 2011, he won the 2nd place worldwide at the ACM-ICPC World Finals. He also earned a gold medal at IOI 2007. He co-founded the startup Lino in 2017.

Prof. Kai TANG

Prof Tang has extensive industrial and research experiences in CAD/CA..M and design and manufacturing automation software development. Before joining HKUST in June 2001, he had been a senior software specialist for ten years at Applicon Inc., U.S.A., with major responsibilities including technical analysis, algorithms design, and code implementation of solid modeling and NC software.

Prof. Xueqing ZHANG

Dr. Xueqing Zhang is an associate professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He has a PhD from the University of Hong Kong and a PhD from the University of Alberta. Dr. Zhang worked for more than six years in the former Economic and Planning Committee of Henan Province and the Yellow River Water Conservancy Committee of the Ministry of Water Resources of China.
