ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Ken CHENG (Conductor and Director)

From 1997 to 2005, Ken was the conductor of the HKUSTSU Wind Ensemble and led the Wind Ensemble in various exchanges. In 2005, the HKUSTSU Wind Ensemble and String Team underwent restructuring and merged to form the present University Philharmonic Orchestra, HKUSTSU, in which Ken has remained the conductor until now. Apart from conducting, Ken also takes part in music arrangement and is often invited to the training and adaptation of performance scores. He was one of the conductors and arrangers of “Taichi Mania Symphonic Live 2018” in the Hong Kong Coliseum. He also conducted orchestral performances in two consecutive summers in Vienna, 2018 at the concert hall of the Vienna Boys' Choir, and 2019 at the Musikverein in Vienna. Now he is also the conductor of Hong Kong Enharmonica.

 

 

Hebe KAN (Harp)

A fourteen-year-old young harpist from Hong Kong, Hebe KAN was awarded with distinction for LTCL Diploma (Licentiate Trinity College London for harp solo recital) at the age of 11. Hebe has won numerous international prizes. Her major achievements include: 1st prize in the Young Artist's Harp Competition 2018 in Ohio, USA, 1st prize and Premio Interpretazione Special Prize at the Amigdala International Music Competition 2018 in Catania, Sicily, 3rd prize at the 2018 and 2019 Osaka International Music Competition Senior Harp Section in Japan, and she was the best performer award winner in 2019 Hong Kong Region.

In 2016 and 2019, Hebe had the honor to be the first young artist representing Hong Kong to perform at the Stars of Tomorrow concert, at the 10th and 11th USA International Harp Competition. She was invited to perform at the Hong Kong Harp Talents concert at the 8th International Festival of Harp Suoni d'Arpa Saluzzo 2017 in Italy.

 

 

HO Chung Ming, Matthew (Violin)

Ho Chung Ming, a year 3 Civil Engineering student in HKUST, is also a music lover and enthusiast in music performance. He began learning the violin at the age of 8. He achieved Trinity LTCL for violin in 2016 and ABRSM Grade 8 in piano and viola in 2015 and 2014 respectively.

He has a great interest in orchestral music and he is currently the concertmaster in University Philharmonic Orchestra, HKUSTSU. He was the winner of the Secondary School Strings Open Class Section of Hong Kong Joint School Music Competition 2016. At HKUST, he received chamber music coaching by renowned musicians including violinist Anders Hui and pianist Amy Sze.

Outside of his orchestral roles, he continues to collaborate with different artists and performed in various ceremonies, musicals, and TV Live Charity Shows.

 

 

Keith YIU (Violin)

Keith Yiu has focused on his music career for more than 10 years. After graduated from HKUST, Keith has taken a Master's degree in Music Education at Hong Kong University of Education (HKUEd) and finished the LTCL violin recital exam; and also joined Nishizaki Takako chamber class that hold by HKUST. Now, Keith keeps teaching violin in schools, music institutes, and private lessons in return to society. Besides the education area, Keith founded the Hong Kong Metropolitan Philharmonics Orchestra (HKMPO) with other musicians for bounding amateur and professional musicians to enhance the music culture in Hong Kong. Keith hopes to do more music activities with different musicians and friends to nurture his own musical life.

 

 

Ronnie HO (Viola)

Ronnie Ho started learning the violin at the age of 9 under the Instrumental Training Scheme at the Music Office. He built a solid foundation with great techniques which enabled him to attain the ABRSM Violin Grade 8 Exam shortly with Distinction. He was also the concertmaster of his secondary school’s orchestra and an active player in chamber music.

Since then, Ronnie has developed a genuine interest in learning the viola. Under the teaching of Dr. Joseph Kam, Ronnie was awarded Distinction at the Diploma in Music Performance Licentiate of Trinity College London (LTCL) Viola Recital in 2013. He also became the viola section leader of the University Philharmonic Orchestra, HKUSTSU and a violist of the Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra, performing frequently on stage.

Ronnie has now been teaching the violin and viola for 5 years and joining different orchestras to further enrich his music career.

 

 

David WONG (Cello)

David Wong started learning cello with Mr. Lai King Fong and Ms. Letty Poon since the age of 8. He completed his Bachelor's degree at HKUST in 2009. He is an enthusiastic music player that has participated in various orchestras and ensemble groups such as the Hong Kong Metropolitan Philharmonic Orchestra and University Philharmonic Orchestra, HKUSTSU.

 

 

LEE Yik Chung (Double Bass and Erhu)

Born in Hong Kong, Lee is an orchestral conductor who worked also as an active double bassist and cellist while at the same time working as a composer and art administrator. To promote classical music to the community, Lee has set up the Hong Kong Community Philharmonic Orchestra since 2013 and has led the orchestra to perform as their director and conductor.

Lee is a CASH member and he has worked on arrangements for ensemble under the request of specific occasions. Being a multi-instrumentalist, Lee has been an active Double Bassist in Hong Kong and Chinese instruments Erhu performer, while have also studied violin, viola, and clarinet.
