Building on revolutions in hardware, software, and communication, we are currently in the midst of the data revolution. Massive amounts of data (terabytes and beyond) are available across domains like science, commerce, finance, healthcare, social media, and real-time sensors. At historically unprecedented levels, we can collect, transmit, curate, and process vast amounts of data at enormous speeds, enabling us to perform ongoing tasks more efficiently and accomplish what was previously impossible. This talk showcases Carnegie Mellon University’s leadership in data science, through rigorous programs in Statistics & Data Science and Machine Learning, as well as initiatives like Data Jam, a nationwide program where student teams analyze real-world datasets, build compelling visualizations, and present their findings with guidance from college mentors. Prof. Sooriamurthi will examine how the data revolution has laid the groundwork for current advancements in AI and Machine Learning, and why these programs and experiential opportunities provide exceptional value for students entering data-driven careers.
This talk introduces the concept of immersive storytelling, particularly in the context of extended reality (XR). It will begin with an overview of the instructor’s work and
showcase various immersive media projects that exemplify the genre. The discussion will focus on the key elements that contribute to a story’s immersiveness, examining personal, cultural, and technological perspectives. Attendees will be encouraged to actively engage by sharing examples of immersive storytelling. By the end of the talk, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how XR can enhance narrative experiences and engage audiences in innovative ways. This talk will also highlight pathways for turning coursework and prototypes into original Intellectual Property (IP), from concept development and collaboration to showcasing and iterating based on feedback. In this context, we will introduce Sona, Carnegie Mellon University’s immersive storytelling festival that highlights the work of filmmakers, artists, and creators in XR, 360° video, and interactive media. Students will learn how participation in Sona can provide opportunities to present projects, build visibility, and develop their own IP within a supportive, real-world festival environment.
