There is an increasing interest in using phase change materials (PCMs) for various engineering fields such as thermal management of electronic components, photovoltaics, batteries, and energy saving in buildings. The main purpose of employing PCMs is exploit its latent heat during the phase change which allows a high energy storage and release with a narrow temperature range. Since the performance of PCM is affected by several parameters, i.e., phase change temperature, latent heat content, besides to other thermophysical properties, a proper evaluation index is needed to reveal its true role. In this talk, the PCM applications in buildings will be focused on, and performance evaluation indexes of PCMs proposed by researchers will be discussed. The indexes will be evaluated based on several cases related to the energy efficiency in buildings so that they can be interpreted more insightfully. Moreover, the performance of PCM will be discussed for different cases, its performance will be compared with the conventional materials.

Müslüm Arıcı is a Professor in Thermodynamics and Heat Technique Division of Mechanical Engineering Department of Kocaeli University, Turkey. He completed Diploma Course at von Karman Institute, Belgium in 2007 and received PhD degree from Kocaeli University in 2010. He worked in Fluid Mechanics Research Group, University of Zaragoza, Spain in 2014 and 2016-2017 as a visiting professor. He is co-author of 230+ papers in refereed SCI-indexed journal papers. He has been serving as associate editor in Energy Sources, Part A: Recovery, Utilization, and Environmental Effects (IF=2.9); Energy, Ecology, and Environment (IF=4.4), Journal of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of Gazi University (IF=1.1), and Journal of Thermal Engineering (E-SCI). He has also been serving as a guest editor in several journals such as Journal of Cleaner Production; Energy and Buildings; Sustainable Energy Technologies and Assessments; Energy for Sustainable Development; Energy; Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials. He was enlisted among world’s top 2% scientists according to Stanford University in years 2020, 2021, and 2022. His fields of interest are Numerical Heat Transfer, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Energy Efficient Buildings, Nanofluids, Solar Energy, Thermal Energy Storage, and Thermal Management.
