WWF Sustainable Seafood Seminar

06:00pm - 07:30pm
LT-F

Hong Kong people consume three times the global average of seafood, placing the city eighth among the largest seafood consumers worldwide. Sourcing from both local and international waters, our seafood choices significantly influence ongoing fishing industry practices. Fish and other seafood are potentially great renewable resources, but they must be carefully managed to prevent over-exploitation of fish stocks and pollution from seafood farms. Nearly a third of all monitored global fish stocks are overfished, and over 60% are harvested at their maximum sustainable yield. Illegal and unregulated fishing is a significant issue, and millions of non-target sea creatures, such as dolphins, are accidentally killed each year as bycatch—caught unintentionally in fishing gear. The impact extends beyond fishing and coastal communities, with broader implications for global food security.

WWF is leading efforts to promote sustainable fishing practices and encourages everyone to buy certified sustainable seafood where available. Together, we can make a significant difference in the health and sustainability of wild fish stocks and seafood farms (aquaculture).

UniGreen Eats is collaborating with WWF by inviting Dr. Loby Hau to discuss WWF's Sustainable Seafood Guide and its program to educate the local community in relations to overfishing and regulations. This event is an opportunity to explore the broader impact of our seafood consumption choices and how they contribute to sustainable practices. By attending, you'll gain a deeper understanding of the necessary balance between consumption and conservation, ensuring future generations can also benefit from the ocean's resources. Come by to learn more about it, or simply to earn your HMAW1905 hours!
