ABOUT THE PUBLIC TALKS

In these public talks, Prof. SU Shishu and Prof. SIOK Wai Ting will explore the significance of Chinese handwriting and calligraphy from complementary cultural and scientific perspectives. Drawing on his expertise in Chinese calligraphy and culture, Prof. Su will illuminate the historical, aesthetic, and humanistic dimensions of written Chinese. Prof. Siok will then share insights from cognitive and neuroscience research on Chinese handwriting, reading, and learning disorders in Chinese children, and discuss how the increasing use of digital technologies may shape future generations’ reading and writing of Chinese characters. Together, they will offer participants a rich and multifaceted understanding of Chinese handwriting and calligraphy as both a cultural tradition and a cognitive process.

苏士澍教授与萧慧婷教授将在这场讲座中，从文化与科学两个互补的角度，共同探讨中国书写与书法的深远意义。苏教授将凭借其在中国书法与传统文化领域的深厚造诣，阐释汉字书写所蕴含的历史底蕴、美学价值与人文精神。萧教授则将分享在认知科学与神经科学领域上，中文手写对中国儿童阅读能力及学习障碍的研究成果，并探讨数位科技日益普及的今天，对下一代中文读写能力可能带来的影响。这将会是一个兼具文化深度与科学视野的跨学科对话，帮助大家从传统与现代、人文与科学的交汇处，重新认识中国书写与书法的价值与意义。
