Our conference will focus on a key part of China’s west. The Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region constitutes one-sixth of China’s territory, borders on eight countries, and is rich in ethno-religious diversity and history. The conference will address the negative narrative of Xinjiang that has emanated from Western politicians and media and resulted in sanctions against Xinjiang. A counter-narrative has now begun among academics globally, however. Conference participants will address topics including land transfer and labor migration, development and social governance, contemporary demography, religion and modernity, deradicalization programs, cultural preservation, media representations etc. Our conference will include scholars from several disciplines, within and outside China. Many participants have engaged in archival and fieldwork in Xinjiang, researching historical and contemporary issues. We will also have scholars who will present global comparative perspectives on key issues related to Xinjiang.
