Seminar - Smart energy-water-food-waste nexus for sustainable development by Dr. Xiaonan WANG

4:00pm - 5:00pm
Online

Abstract

The grand challenges facing human societies are all closely interconnected with the sustainable provision and consumption of energy, water and food for constantly growing and developing populations, as well as the subsequent processing and management of wastes and pollutions. In Dr. Xiaonan Wang’s team, a series of decision-support platforms are developed combining comprehensive database, agent-based simulation and resource technology network optimization, to deal with the challenges of energy, water, food, and waste systems through a nexus manner for a circular economy. Smart energy technologies, operational strategies and market design will also be specially discussed. To tackle the increasing global energy demand the climate change problem, the integration of distributed resources, renewable energy, and negative emission technologies provides promising solutions for sustainable and resilient energy future. The state-of-the-art modelling, machine learning, and blockchain technologies will be introduced and applied to the smart energy systems for overall economic and environmental benefits.

Speaker bio:

Dr Xiaonan Wang is an assistant professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS). She received her BEng from Tsinghua University in 2011 and PhD from University of California, Davis in 2015. After working as a postdoctoral research associate at Imperial College London, she joined NUS as an assistant professor since 2017. Her research focuses on the development of intelligent computational methods including multi-scale modelling, optimization, data analytics and machine learning for applications in advanced materials, energy, environmental and manufacturing systems to support smart and sustainable development. She is leading a Smart Systems Engineering research group at NUS of more than 20 team members as PI and also the deputy director of the Accelerated Materials Development programme in Singapore. She has published more than 80 peer-reviewed papers, organized and chaired several international conferences, and delivered more than 50 presentations and invited talks at conferences and universities on five continents. She is an editorial board member of >5 SCI journals e.g. Applied Energy, ACS ES&T Engineering and Advanced Intelligent Systems. She has received the AIChE-SLS Outstanding Young Principal Investigator Award, Young Researcher Award for Engineering Sustainable Development, Applied Energy Highly Cited Paper Award, IChemE Global Awards Young Researcher finalist and Royal Society International Exchanges Award, as well several best paper awards at IEEE and Applied Energy Conferences.
