ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 outbreak exposed the vulnerability of the global supply chain to a wide audience. From transport and logistics perspective, port congestions have seriously disrupted the cargo flows in the global supply chains. This talk will focus on container shipping industry. Firstly, I will present a few studies that we conducted to enhance operation efficiency at port yard and landside that help reduce port congestion and emissions. This includes optimizing operations at seaport rail terminals, optimizing container retrieval and reshuffling, and smart stacking at container yard. Secondly, taking the supply chain viewpoint, I will explain the challenging issues in container shipping supply chain (CSSC) by focusing on digitalization and decarbonization. Possible pathway toward digitalization and pathway towards decarbonization in CSSC will be discussed including future research opportunities
