IoT Thrust Seminar - A Data Science Perspective on the Internet

In this talk, the speaker will present an overview of the last 5 years of his research. He will discuss the emerging field of Internet Data Science, and explain how it can be used to build faster and more secure online systems. Following this, he will deep dive into two recent studies related to the Decentralised Web. The presentation is underpinned by research published at a number of well-known venues, including ACM IMC, WWW, ICWSM and ACM SIGMETRICS.

Dr. Gareth Tyson
Queen Mary University of London

Gareth Tyson is Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) at Queen Mary University of London, and a Fellow at the Alan Turing Institute. He is Deputy Director of the Institute of Applied Data Science (IADS), co-leads the Social Data Science Lab (SDS), and is Deputy Director of the DAME PhD CDT. His research is in the broad area of Internet Data Science and over the last 4 years, he has been awarded almost £2 million in research funding. He has received coverage from news outlets such as MIT Tech Review, Washington Post, Slashdot, BBC, The Times, Daily Mail, Wired, Science Daily, Ars Technica, The Independent, Business Insider and The Register. He also serves as a reviewer and program committee member for a number of prominent conferences/journals such as IEEE/ACM ToN, IEEE TPDS, ACM IMC, ACM CoNEXT, IEEE ICDCS and ICWSM. He received the Outstanding Reviewer Award thrice at ICWSM (2016, 2018, 2019); was awarded the Best Student Paper Award at the Web Conference 2020; the Best Paper Award at eCrime'19; the Honourable Mention Award at the Web Conference 2018; and the Best Presentation Award at INFOCOM'18. He received QMUL's Faculty Research Excellence Award in 2021; and the Brendan Murphy Memorial Young Researcher Prize in 2013. He holds a PhD from Lancaster University, and has held visiting positions at both University of Cambridge and University College London (UCL).
