Climate model simulations show that tropical circulation would experience significant structural changes under global warming, including weakening and poleward expansion of the subtropical descent, and strengthening and tightening of the equatorial ascent, although the magnitudes of these changes vary substantially between models. The tropical circulation changes are closely coupled with convective properties and cloud radiative effects, which in turn affect long-term temperature and precipitation responses to increasing greenhouse gases. In this talk, I will present the interactions between convection, cloud and circulation in both models and observations. The implications for global and regional hydrological cycles will be discussed.

Hui Su received a B.S. in Atmospheric Dynamics from Peking University in 1991 and a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Washington in 1998. Currently, she is a Principal Scientist in the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), California Institute of Technology and an adjunct professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Su received the JPL Lew Allen Award for Excellence in 2008 and NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal in 2010 for “major advances in the understanding of water vapor and cloud feedbacks on climate change through quantitative analysis of observations from multiple NASA satellites.”  She is an Assistant Director of the Joint Institute for Regional Earth System Science and Engineering of UCLA. She is an Editor of Geophysical Research Letter and the Vice Chair of American Meteorological Society Committee on Tropical Meteorology and Tropical Cyclones.
