Public Research Seminar by Sustainable Energy and Environment Thrust - From neutral to negative emissions

Accumulated carbon dioxide from fossil fuel power plants is one of the main contributors of carbon dioxide emission in the atmosphere since industry revolution. With more and more countries claiming its action plan on increasing the renewable energy installed capacity and increasing the electricity generated by renewable energy, conventional fossil fuel power plant without carbon capture and storage might face shut down during its operational lifetime. However, installing carbon capture equipments will only reach carbon neutrality in the power sector. Furthermore, shutting down those power plants will not help to remove carbon dioxide that has emitted into the atmosphere.

Therefore, further emission reduction methods is introduce to cut down the accumulated emissions a power plant could emits into the atmosphere during its operational lifetime. For example, introducing biomass carbon capture technologies to existing power plant might help to reduce part of the greenhouse gas that has gone into the atmosphere in the past. Applying direct air capture (DAC) technology can also bring down the carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere.

This talk explains the importance of shifting from carbon neutral technology to negative emission technologies.

Prof Jia Li is Associate Professor at the China-UK Low Carbon College, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. After 15 years of research on Carbon Capture and Storage, especially on capture ready and capture retrofit at Imperial College London, the University of Exeter and the University of Edinburgh in the UK, Prof Li returned to China in Sep 2018. She is also the Senior Advisor on Clean Energy for the Shanghai Environment and Energy Exchange (Chinese National Carbon Market) and visiting Professor with the University of Sheffield. As the Technical Director at the UK-China (Guangdong) CCUS Centre, which she jointly established in collaboration with experts from the UKCCSR, SCCS and Guangdong Electricity Design Institute (GEDI) in 2015, she was the Team Leader for the ADB CCS center of Excellency (Guangdong) and a key member of the ADB Shanghai CCS center. She has led or involved in six National level CCUS Roadmaps of China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines and Bangladesh. Recently, she has been awarded China`s first Direct Air Capture funding from Shanghai STCSM.
