Engineering structures typically exhibit complex behaviors under dynamic loads from operational environment (e.g., wind, traffic, earthquakes and hurricanes for civil structures; impact for aircrafts). High spatial- and temporal- resolution dynamic measurements and modeling are thus required for high-fidelity characterization, analysis, and prediction of the structure’s response. However, it is a significant challenge to obtain high-resolution structural dynamic measurements using traditional techniques. In this talk we will present our research in leveraging the computational power of machine learning to address these bottlenecks of existing sensing methods and hardware, towards high-resolution and super-resolution sensing and analysis of dynamic structures and materials. We will demonstrate and discuss laboratory experiments and real-world case studies of a variety of engineering structures.

Dr. Yongchao Yang has been an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering – Engineering Mechanics at Michigan Technological University since 2019. His expertise is in structural dynamics, experimental mechanics, system identification, sensing and structural health monitoring. He has published more than 50 papers in international journals and 3 book chapters, with a citation of ~1900, and holds 2 US patents. The sponsors of his research include federal such as DARPA and Federal Highway Administration, state agencies and industries. He received a few awards and recognitions including the 2017 Raymond C. Reese Research Prize of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), an R&D 100 Award (2018), a Best Paper Award (2020) and the 2022 Young Investigator Lecture Award of Society for Experimental Mechanics (SEM), and the 2022 Achenbach Medal. He has been an Editorial Board Member of the Wiley journal Structural Control and Health Monitoring since 2018.

Before joining the faculty of Michigan Tech in 2019, he was a Staff Scientist at Argonne National Laboratory (2018-2019), after a Director’s Funded Postdoctoral Fellowship at Los Alamos National Laboratory (2015-2017). He obtained his Ph.D. from Rice University in 2014 and bachelor’s from Harbin Institute of Technology in 2010. His homepage is at: http://yongchao-yang.github.io
