ABSTRACT

Rail and urban transit systems often serve a large number of passengers on a daily basis and play an important role in supporting economic activities. This presentation will discuss how to utilize modeling and data analysis tools to improve our understanding and performance of rail or urban transit systems. In particular, this presentation will first discus data mining and modeling techniques for quantifying mobility patterns and demand prediction in rail/transit systems. Then, given certain levels of demand information, pricing and service network design problems in rail/transit systems will be presented. A few examples on game-theoretical models and network design models for passenger-freight integrated transit/rail system will be illustrated. In addition, several empirical studies that examine the impacts of rail development on accessibility, economy and equity will be discussed, where the joint effect of rail development and megalopolis policy will also be covered. In summary, this presentation illustrates with examples how modeling and analysis tools can be applied to rail and urban transit systems for better policy and decision making.
