We attempt to leverage the advancement of AI for decision making in large-scale industrial systems such as supply chains. There are many challenges if we interact directly with the real systems, e.g., sufficiency of data, cost of experimentation, etc. We propose using simulation and digital twins as a platform of experimentation and a data generator for the AI algorithms. Then Reinforcement Learning based algorithms can explore and practice in the digital twin and learn and train policies that can then be deployed in the real systems. An ongoing project of a digital twin of an online retailer will be introduced as an example.
Tong is currently an Associate Professor at Department of Industrial Systems Engineering and Management, National University of Singapore. His research focuses on applying Operations Research, Data Analytics, and Machine Learning methodologies in practical problems in Supply Chain Management and Retail Operations. He has been Director of Forecasting Algorithms at Alibaba Digital Supply Chain for about five years and an academic at NUS Business School for more than ten years. Tong received his PhD degree from Decision Sciences, INSEAD, France/Singapore.
